Brian Tuohy, PhD, MSt, is an Assistant Professor of Bioethics and Co-Director of Education in the Center for Health Justice and Bioethics at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia. Trained as a sociologist, his work examines medical education, immigrant health, structural determinants of health, and ethics. He teaches across four professional degree programs in medicine, dentistry, podiatry, and physician assistant studies, and directs a large interprofessional service-learning program grounded in community partnership.
As a Macy Faculty Scholar, Dr. Tuohy proposes to develop and evaluate a curriculum for Emergency Medicine residents that integrates interpreter use, ethical reasoning, and structural competency in the care of patients with limited English proficiency, with the goal of creating a scalable national model for communication in emergency and frontline clinical settings.
Naomi Rosenberg, MD, Assistant Dean for Narrative Medicine and Health Humanities, and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, will serve as Dr. Tuohy’s mentor.
