News and Commentary Modern Healthcare on the New Era of IPE

Last week, Modern Healthcare’s Andis Robeznieks reported on the growing number of academic medical centers and health systems around the country that are offering training to students and working professionals in how doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants and other clinicians should collaborate to provide coordinated care. The programs that Robeznieks highlighted in his article featured the work of several Macy grantees, including the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Mark Earnest’s work at the Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and Geisinger Health System’s patient-centered medical home and team-based care model.

Dr. George Thibault, president of the Macy Foundation, said in the article that interprofessional care “is a different way of doing business.” Thibault also told Robeznieks that team-based training needs to be extended to practicing physicians and other working clinicians.
