Our Mission & Vision
The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation is the only national foundation dedicated solely to improving the education and training of future health professionals.
Our Mission
The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation was established a century ago to promote health and healing. A glance at our history reveals how our priorities and activities have changed over the years, but we remain devoted to our founding mission.
Today, we promote health and healing by supporting innovations in health professions education. We believe that transforming how future health professionals are educated is among the most impactful investments we can make to improve public health.
Our grantmaking and other programming support educational interventions at medical, nursing, and other health professions schools across the United States, with a particular focus on their clinical training sites—including hospitals, community clinics, and other settings where learners deliver patient care.
In these educational environments, we support innovation in three priority areas: diversity, equity and belonging; high-performing interprofessional teams; and ethics. We also nurture the careers of select early-career clinical faculty who research and lead educational innovations at their home institutions and beyond.
