Preparing the Ground for Inter-professional Education: Getting to Know and Understand Each Other
Emory University School of Medicine
Principal Investigator: Principal Investigator: William T. Branch, Jr., M.D., M.A.C.P.: Dr. Branch is the Carter Smith, Sr. Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He previously planned and successfully completed three iterations of a longitudinal faculty development project for physicians in humanism. Twenty three medical schools participated in the three iterations. Evaluations done on thirteen of the schools revealed statistically significant humanistic teaching and role modeling by participating faculty compared to matched controls using a validated questionnaire filled out by learners.(1, 2) There were few drop-outs and attendance was excellent in all but one school. With permission from the Macy Foundation, Dr. Branch used unspent funds from the most recent project, “Passing the Torch”, to pilot an IPE group and develop an IPE curriculum at Emory University involving physicians, nurses, physical therapists and physician assistants, based on the previously successful physician model in humanism. Experience with this pilot program (see further on for details) leads Dr. Branch to propose that the IPE model can be successfully carried out and will be highly beneficial for the IPE educational program at six additional universities. Co-Principal Investigator: Corrine Abraham, D.N.P., R.N., Assistant Professor, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Emory University, and Director, Innovation and Evidence-Based Practice, Atlanta VA Medical Center.
