Integrating the High Value Care Curriculum in Undergraduate Medical Education

Integrating Lifestyle Medicine Education into Medical School Curricula

This award will support a two-day invitational think tank entitled, “Incorporating Lifestyle Medicine Education into Medical School Curricula,” in Greenville, South Carolina. The invitational think tank will engage experts and key decision makers in medical school curricular design to address integration of Lifestyle Medicine competencies during all four years of undergraduate medical education, and to gain consensus and momentum for the creation, testing, dissemination, and implementation of best practices of Lifestyle Medicine curriculum for all US medical students.

Improving the clinical reasoning of medical students; guaranteeing competency of graduates

Principal Investigator: PI – Debra Klamen, MD, MHPE Title: Associate Dean for Education and Curriculum, Professor and Chair, Department of Medical Education, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIUSOM) Qualifications: Dr. Klamen has been heavily involved in undergraduate curriculum and assessment innovations for much of her career. Examples include the development of University of Illinois’ Essentials of Clinical Medicine course, an active learning, small-group-based course incorporating clinical skills training into the first two years of medical school. She created, developed, and implemented SIUSOM’s Longitudinal Performance Examination, a clinical reasoning progress test, which is now used by 5 medical schools around the country. She designed SIUSOM’s senior clinical competency examination remediation course in 2006. She was responsible for the development of SIUSOM’s diagnostic justification exercise, which examines the clinical reasoning skills of students throughout their four years of medical school. She heads the innovations curriculum committee at SIUSOM and has been at the forefront of the development of the innovative curricula proposed in this grant. Dr. Klamen has been active in publishing her scholarly work in the areas of clinical reasoning, the diagnosis and remediation of students failing standardized patient examinations, and preparation of students to enter residency for much of her career.

Modeling Collaboration to Develop Interprofessional Education in Primary Care

This planning grant will be used to lay the foundation for expansion of interprofessional education through a partnership among Harvard Medical School, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the MGH Institute of Health Professions, Northeastern Univeristy Bouvé College of Health Sciences at Northeastern, Simmons School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the Stoeckle Center for Primary Care Innovation at the MGH. These institutions will seek to strengthen their institutional relationships with one another in order to expand the scope and depth of their interprofessional education curricula.

A Curriculum for Mentoring New Clinicians in the Community Health Center Context
The Kraft Center for Community Health
This award will be used to assist community health centers in their efforts to recruit primary care clinicians and better enable senior leaders in providing effective mentorship for new clinicians in community health center settings.
Principal Investigator: Derri Shtasel, MD, MPH Executive Director The Kraft Family National Center for Leadership and Training in Community Health Dr Shtasel is a psychiatrist who has worked on the academic-community interface for the past thirty years and is deeply committed to providing access and care for underserved populations. She has held leadership positions in education and clinical services including the Director of Psychiatry Residency Education at the University of Pennsylvania, Chief of Adult Psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance, and Director of Ambulatory Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She is currently the Director of the Division of Public and Community Psychiatry at MGH. Her work has centered on developing academic-community partnerships to improve health service delivery for people with severe and persistent mental illness, and to create innovative training models in community settings for medical students and residents. As Executive Director, Dr. Shtasel provides overall strategic leadership for the Center: directing post-residency multidisciplinary training programs, expanding the community health workforce, and creating a national leadership council for community health training and practice. Dr. Shtasel is a graduate of Swarthmore College, Temple University School of Medicine and the Harvard School of Public Health, and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School.

2013 Gregg Stracks Leadership Summit
Primary Care Progress
This award will help fund the 2013 Gregg Stracks Leadership Summit, a two-day training that convenes 75 PCP chapter leaders to prepare participants to enact local campaigns promoting primary care and advancing innovation in care delivery and provider training. Summit participants will include medical, nursing, physician assistant, and pharmacy students along with residents and select faculty.

Summit on Innovations in Public Health Education
Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health
This award is to support an invitation-only Summit on Innovations in Public Health Education, conceived to drive the field in new directions for what lies ahead. The summit will provide a forum for academic leaders from around the world to share innovative ideas and discuss different approaches to enhancing public health educational initiatives, and develop a unified vision for how the field can be advanced and better integrated into innovations in all health professions education.
Principal Investigator: MELISSA D. BEGG, ScD is Vice Dean of Education and Professor of Clinical Biostatistics at the Mailman School of Public Health. She is overseeing the implementation of the major curriculum renewal initiative for the Mailman School’s MPH program. She also serves on the Association of Schools of Public Health’s MPH Expert Panel to update the MPH for the 21st century. Her areas of focus include advancing interdisciplinary science, training, and mentorship; clinical research education; and statistical methods in psychiatry and oral health. Dr. Begg received the university-wide Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching and the Mailman School Teaching Award from the Graduating Class in 2006. LINDA FRIED, MD, MPH, is Dean of the Mailman School of Public Health and DeLamar Professor of Public Health. She is also Senior Vice President at Columbia University Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Fried is an internationally renowned leader in the fields of epidemiology and geriatric medicine. She has dedicated her career to the science of healthy aging, particularly the prevention of frailty, disability and non-communicable diseases, and design of age-friendly cities and other approaches to strengthen the benefits to all of being an aging society. Dr. Fried co-founded Experience Corps, a community-based senior volunteer program designed to support the academic success of children while also promoting the health of older adults.

University of New England Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Summit
University of New England
This award will support a two-day, Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP) Summit. The University of New England and clinical partners throughout Maine are eager to implement interprofessional rotations. The IPCP Summit will create a framework in which local health education and health care leaders can work together to develop a shared vision for interprofessional education and practice at the individual community level.
