Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medical Education
In November 2024, the Foundation convened invited experts and innovators for three days of intensive discussions on the challenges and opportunities related to safe and effective implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching, learning, assessment, and evaluation. A set of consensus recommendations—developed during the conference and published in Academic Medicine—provides the medical education and broader health professions education communities with action steps to help them incorporate AI into their education and training programs. The contents of the journal—which also includes an “Innovations Report” that examines the current AI landscape in medical education and implications for the future, as well as several commentaries—is the focus of a webinar series hosted by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). After the conference, the Foundation announced its Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education: A Grants Program to Advance Innovation in Medical Education, which is supporting three demonstration projects that are implementing and evaluating innovative strategies to integrate AI into medical education and prepare current and future physicians on the ethical use of AI to improve patient care.
