Our Priorities Career Development in Health Professions Education

Educators are vital to transforming how we teach and prepare the next generation of health professionals. Health professions faculty must have the skills and knowledge to teach new curriculum content and to design and launch new models for clinical education. We must ensure a diverse group of leaders and innovators is equipped to transform education.

Creating Change Agents

We support projects to develop, test, and disseminate faculty training programs that help faculty create impactful student learning. These initiatives help faculty develop the tools and resources to more effectively train the next generation of health professionals.

We also invest in promising educational changemakers, supporting their efforts to implement new educational innovations and build a more diverse health professions workforce. Learn more about the Macy Faculty Scholars Program.

Building New Skills and Expertise

Academic leaders are developing the skills they need to design and implement timely and relevant instructional programs for health professions students through efforts that:

  • Educate faculty about new teaching methods and tools, such as online and virtual learning, simulation, video and other technologies.
  • Introduce faculty to training models and approaches, such as how to teach and facilitate collaboration and team-based practice among students.
  • Increase faculty expertise in teaching new and emerging subject areas, such as patient engagement and health systems science.

Increase faculty and leadership diversity by addressing issues related to recruitment, promotion, and retention of women and underrepresented minorities.

Overcoming Hurdles to Implementation

There are both practical and philosophical challenges involved in implementing faculty development programs and growing leaders and innovators in health professions education, including:

  • Finding time for career development in the already full schedules of young faculty and emerging leaders.
  • Effectively disseminating and scaling up new faculty training programs.
  • Overcoming skepticism and inertia and nurturing cultural change at health professions schools.
