New Practice Models Driving Education Reforms

Regardless of the Supreme Court’s decision on the Affordable Care Act, expected this week, one thing is clear—America’s health care delivery system is transforming.

New practice models that require greater collaboration, such as accountable care organizations and patient-centered medical homes, are being established and the U.S. medical education system is responding. An article in this week’s American Medical News reflects on some of the innovative programs at medical schools across the country to create interprofessional education experiences and prepare medical students for collaboration and team approaches to care delivery.

A huge amount of energy has been harnessed on meaningful reform of the delivery system. We must move quickly to marry these changes with reforms in the education of our health professionals to ensure we have a future healthcare workforce armed with the skills and experience they need to practice effectively in our changing health care system.

Leading Innovation in Health Professions Education: The Macy Faculty Scholars Annual Meeting
